From Kuramoto to Crawford: exploring the onset of synchronization in populations of coupled oscillators

چکیده

The Kuramoto model describes a large population of coupled limit-cycle oscillators whose natural frequencies are drawn from some prescribed distribution. If the coupling strength exceeds a certain threshold, the system exhibits a phase transition: some of the oscillators spontaneously synchronize, while others remain incoherent. The mathematical analysis of this bifurcation has proved both problematic and fascinating. We review 25 years of research on the Kuramoto model, highlighting the false turns as well as the successes, but mainly following the trail leading from Kuramoto’s work to Crawford’s recent contributions. It is a lovely winding road, with excursions through mathematical biology, statistical physics, kinetic theory, bifurcation theory, and plasma physics. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Extracting order parameters from global measurements with application to coupled electrochemical oscillators

The calculation of order parameters to characterize the degree of synchronization usually requires the measurement of time series of observable quantities for all individual dynamical elements. In this article, a new method of extracting the Kuramoto order from global measurements for weakly coupled, nearly identical oscillators is established and successfully tested with electrochemical popula...

Chimera and Phase Cluster States in Populations of Coupled Chemical Oscillators

Populations of coupled oscillators may exhibit two coexisting subpopulations, one with synchronized oscillations and the other with unsynchronized oscillations, even though all of the oscillators are coupled to each other in an equivalent manner. This phenomenon, discovered about ten years ago in theoretical studies by Kuramoto and Battogtokh [1], was further characterized by Abrams and Strogat...

The onset of synchronization in systems of globally coupled chaotic and periodic oscillators

A general stability analysis is presented for the determination of the transition from incoherent to coherent behavior in an ensemble of globally coupled, heterogeneous, continuous-time dynamical systems. The formalism allows for the simultaneous presence of ensemble members exhibiting chaotic and periodic behavior, and, in a special case, yields the Kuramoto model for globally coupled periodic...

Asymptotic synchronous behavior of Kuramoto type models with frustrations

We present a quantitative asymptotic behavior of coupled Kuramoto oscillators with frustrations and give some sufficient conditions for the parameters and initial condition leading to phase or frequency synchronization. We consider three ensembles of Kuramoto oscillators with frustration. First, we study a general case with nonidentical oscillators; i.e., the natural frequencies are distributed...

Effect of time delay on the onset of synchronization of the stochastic Kuramoto model

We consider the Kuramoto model of globally coupled phase oscillators with time-delayed interactions, that is subject to Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (Gaussian) colored or non-Gaussian colored noise. We investigate numerically the interplay between the influences of the finite correlation time of noise τ and the time delay τd on the onset of the synchronization process. The cases for identical and noniden...
